The Libyan Army is launching an operation in Tripoli today. Heavy manifestations of army personnel could be seen outside of the city. Shelling and shooting has been heard near the area surrounding Tripoli Airport.
The army is controlled by the internationally recognised house of representatives, seen as liberal and not controlled by the muslim brotherhood controlled GNC. By many this is seen as the lesser of two evils, as these are trained and controlled soldiers rather than the militia groups which have been carrying out military actions causing the destruction of airports and nearly 400,000 internally displaced persons in the country over the last months.
The stated goal of the army and governments recent operation is to stabilise the country, build democracy, and put an end to extremism and random armed groups.
